Grinding Door? Fix the Parts, Not the Noise

Worn rollers, loose hinges and bent track make a door bind, shake and eventually leave its track.

  • Squealing and jerky travel are early warnings

Common problems

Signs Your Rollers, Hinges or Tracks Need Work

Rollers are the wheels that guide each panel along the track. Hinges are the joints between panels that hold those rollers. Tracks guide the whole door and can be straightened or replaced.

Nylon rollers run almost silently and can last roughly 12 to 20 years, while steel rollers are louder.[1] See nylon vs steel garage door rollers for the full comparison. Springs and cables are separate jobs, covered under spring repair and replacement.

Watch for these signs:

  • Grinding, squealing or rattling as the door travels
  • Jerky or uneven movement, or a door that looks crooked
  • Flat spots, cracks or wear on rollers, and loose or bent hinges
  • Gaps or dents in the track, or dust packed into it after a Mesa or Chandler dust storm

Sound familiar? Your door got noisy. You sprayed it and it quieted down for a while. Now it shudders, and one side sits crooked.

Waiting costs more.

A worn roller puts strain on the hinges, a bent track chews up rollers, and the damage can reach the panels.

What it costs

Roller and Track Repair Cost in Phoenix

Price depends on how many rollers and hinges are replaced, the roller type, whether the track is repaired or replaced, panel damage, and the service-call terms. The figures below come from Phoenix-area company websites, checked October 2026, plus published research.

Price factors

What moves the price

  • Number of rollers and hinges

More parts replaced means a higher total

  • Roller type

Nylon rollers add to the cost compared with basic ones

  • Track repair or replacement

A bent track that needs replacing costs more than realigning it

  • Panel damage

Damaged panels add to the job

  • Service-call terms

Fees run $0 to $150, and some are waived if you approve the repair

Item What the sources say
Service-call or diagnostic fee Most list $0 to $150, and some waive or credit it if you approve the repair
Basic repairs One Phoenix company's site says these typically run $100 to $400
Nylon rollers, whole door $249 in one Arizona company's published table[2]
Nylon upgrade on a full replacement Often adds $100 to $200[1]
Door off track, put back, aligned and tested From $200[2]
Hinges, bent track repair or replacement Depends on the job

These are general guides, not quotes. Ask for a written quote that itemizes parts and labor.

Pro tip

Ask whether the service-call fee is waived or credited if you approve the repair, since some companies do this.

What to expect

How a Roller and Track Repair Visit Works

A visit follows five steps, summarised here before the detail.

Step by step

The five steps of a visit

  1. Inspect

The pro checks balance, rollers, hinges and track.

  2. Confirm the cause

Worn parts, bent track or a failing spring are told apart.

  3. Secure the door

The door is locked down before work starts.

  4. Replace and repair

Worn parts come out and the track is straightened or replaced.

  5. Align and test

Full cycles confirm smooth, level travel.

  1. Inspect. The pro checks door balance, rollers, hinges and track.
  2. Confirm the cause. Worn parts, a bent track and a failing spring can look alike from the driveway.
  3. Secure the door. Top-panel rollers and bent track sections involve tension on the door, so a pro locks it down before work starts.
  4. Replace and repair. Worn rollers and hinges come out, and the track is straightened or replaced.
  5. Align and test. The door is run through full cycles to confirm smooth, level travel.

Most visits in Scottsdale, Gilbert or Tempe are a single trip when parts are on the truck.

Ask the pro to show you what failed and whether panels or track are damaged beyond repair. A bent track may still be repairable.

Choosing a company

Hiring in Arizona: Checking an ROC License

Arizona generally requires a license for work above the state's dollar threshold or work that needs a permit. Small roller jobs may fall below it. This is not legal advice.

No ROC class names garage doors. Classes that may appear include R-61 Carpentry, Remodeling and Repairs, R-62 Minor Home Improvements, and B General Residential. The class must cover the work in your contract.

Before you book a pro in Peoria, Glendale or elsewhere:

  • Search the business name or 6-digit license number in the ROC Contractor Search
  • Confirm the license is current and the class fits
  • Call the number on the ROC record
  • Ask for proof of liability insurance, since the ROC does not require it
  • Check that written contracts above the threshold show the license number

Red flags include a quote that won't itemize parts and labor, and pressure to replace the whole door before anyone explains what failed. The guide to questions to ask before hiring covers more.

Questions Valley garage door owners ask

Start by disconnecting the opener and closing the door fully. Clamp a C-clamp or locking pliers on the track just above the roller to hold the door in place, then gently lift the door slightly so the roller can slide back into the track. Guide the roller into the track opening with a rubber mallet, tapping lightly if needed, and make sure it sits fully within the track channel. If the roller is damaged or the stem is worn, replace it rather than reinstalling it, since a worn roller can pop out again quickly.
