One Bad Panel Shouldn't Cost You a Whole Door

A dented, cracked or punctured section doesn't always mean a new door. When a matching section exists, a pro can swap just that one.

  • Replace a single damaged section, not the entire door
  • Spot the signs a dent is more than cosmetic
  • Check an Arizona ROC licence before you hire

Common problems

Signs a Panel Needs Replacing

A garage door panel replacement swaps one damaged section and keeps the rest of the door. It only works when a matching section exists in style, gauge, colour and height. Whether that beats a new door is covered in the single panel vs whole door comparison.

Look for these signs:

  • A crease, puncture or crack in one section, or a dent that has stretched the metal. A shallow cosmetic dent may be repairable, as covered in fixing a dented panel.
  • Binding, sagging or going off track, because a bent section no longer sits square with the rollers and hinges.
  • Broken glass or window inserts, or wood sections that have split or warped.

Waiting makes it worse.

A bent section keeps stressing hinges, rollers and the opener, and a small crack can spread. Repairs that start with one section can grow into track and hardware work.

Sound familiar? One section is crushed. You tried pushing the dent out. It held for a week. Now the door scrapes and hangs crooked in Mesa's afternoon heat.

What it costs

What Panel Replacement Costs in Phoenix

Price depends on door material and size, whether a matching section exists, how many sections are damaged, labour, and any hardware or balance work. When no match is available, replacing the whole door can be cheaper. The full breakdown is in our garage door panel replacement cost guide.

Price factors

What moves the price

  • Door material and size

Larger or insulated doors cost more

  • Matching section

If none exists, a whole new door can be cheaper

  • Damaged sections

More damaged sections raise the total

  • Hardware or balance work

Adds to the job when needed

Figures below come from Phoenix-area company websites, checked October 2026. Each line is a different company, so treat them as guidance, not a quote.

Item Figure printed
Diagnostic / service-call fee Most list $0 to $150 (middle value $125)
Panel replacement $1475 (one company's listed price)
Single steel 8x7 door installed, door only $1,200–$1,800
Double insulated 16x7 door installed, door only $2,200–$4,500
Extra hardware or balance work Depends on the job

Two of the listings say the service fee is waived or credited when you approve the repair. Ask for an itemized written quote before work starts.

Pro tip

Ask whether the service fee is credited when you approve the repair, and get the credit written into the quote.

What to expect

How a Panel Replacement Works, Step by Step

Most jobs follow the same sequence in Chandler, Gilbert or anywhere else in the valley. The four steps below show the order of work, and the numbered list after them gives the detail.

Step by step

The four steps at a glance

  1. Inspection and matching

The technician checks the damage and looks for a matching section.

  2. Securing the door

Spring tension is relieved and the section is disconnected.

  3. Swapping the section

The new section goes in and the door is rebalanced.

  4. Testing

The opener, auto-reverse and balance are tested, and the written scope is confirmed.

  1. Inspection and matching. The technician checks the damage, the rest of the door, and whether a matching section exists. Older doors are harder to match.
  2. Securing the door. Spring tension is relieved and the affected section is disconnected. This is professional work, and spring tension can cause serious injury. See spring repair and replacement.
  3. Swapping the section. The damaged section comes out. The new one goes in with hinges, rollers and weatherstripping, and the door is rebalanced.
  4. Testing. The tech tests the opener, auto-reverse and balance, then confirms the written scope.

Most of the work is a single visit once the section is in hand. Ordering a matching section can add waiting time.

Check with your local building department to confirm whether this job needs a permit. Ask the contractor and your city's building department, and see Phoenix garage door permits.

Doors on a wind-rated or pressure-rated system should be compared by the psf rating on the door label, not mph claims. Your local building official has the final say.

Choosing a company

How to Verify an Arizona ROC Licence

Start with the ROC Contractor Search. Enter the contractor's name or 6-digit licence number, then confirm the licence is current and its class covers the work in your contract.

A licence is generally required when labour and materials exceed $1,000 or when a permit is required.[1] An exempt handyman must advertise "not a licensed contractor."

No class is named specifically for garage doors. Classes that may apply include R-60 Finish Carpentry, R-61 Carpentry, Remodeling and Repairs, R-62 Minor Home Improvements, and B- General Residential.

The ROC decides class fit, so confirm there.

Ask these before you sign:

  • What is your ROC licence number, and does the class cover this job?
  • Can you show proof of general liability insurance? The ROC requires only workers' compensation.
  • Does the written contract list the work, total price, deposit and payment schedule?
  • Does a matching section exist, or is a full door cheaper?
  • Who pulls the permit, if one is needed?

Licensed contractors must also hold a licence bond. For more, read questions to ask before hiring.

Questions Valley garage door owners ask

In most cases, repairing a garage door is cheaper than replacing it, especially when the damage is limited to a single component like a spring, opener, or roller. Replacement becomes more cost-effective when the door has multiple failing parts, significant panel damage, or its parts are visibly wearing out.

Common repair versus replacement scenarios:

  • Spring replacement — repair, usually a few hundred dollars
  • Opener replacement — repair or replacement depending on age and motor condition
  • Panel damage or rust through multiple sections — replacement often makes more sense
  • Insulation or wind-rating upgrades — replacement may be the only option to meet energy or wind needs
Factor Repair Replace
Typical cost Lower Higher
Time required A few hours About a day
Best for Single failed part Multiple failures or old door
Lifespan gained Varies Significant
